Students on their way to China.

Norske studenter til KIna

In the last few weeks Telemark University College (TUC) and China Three Gorges University in Yichang have agreed on a learning agreement. This is an agreement between the universities and students about what subjects students can take in Yichang and that the subjects can be accepted as part of their degree at TUC.

Next autumn 4 students from the Mechanical Engineering Programme will travel to China to do their last year of the bachelor degree there. They are very much looking forward to this.

– I think it will be really exciting. China is an exciting country, and a country that has incredible economic growth and development in technology. This experience could be very useful, and could be important when we apply for jobs in the future, says Yngve Eide.

Tougher study environment

They expect a different and tougher study environment than they are used to in Porsgrunn.

– Here we are freer to organise our studies as we want, but in China it will no doubt be more challenging. If you are told to do something, you have to do it properly, says Jarle Opheim.

Wants to learn Mandarin Chinese

In addition to the academic work, a year of study in China will mean challenges both culturally and linguistically, but the four students are ready to meet the challenges.

– We signalled very early that we wanted to study a year abroad, and we are aware of the challenges that come with it. Most of the teaching will be conducted in English, but during the first years in Porsgrunn we have earned extra credits so we could also learn some Chinese. I think it is important to learn some Chinese, then we will have better prospects, says Rune Johansen.

– We know a little bit about the Chinese culture, but I would like to learn more before we go. China has a rich culture and is different from what we are used to here in Norway, that is certain, says Jonas Vidnes.

- Impressive campus

Unni Kaasin is an adviser at the Faculty of Technology, and she thinks the students are going to an impressive university.

- The university is very large, it has several sports fields and a large road around the campus area. There are more than 20 000 students and new student housing for international students, says Kaasin who visited the university in October.

Good students

University College Teacher, Ole Melteig, is happy about the four students going to China for a year.

– I think this will be a very good experience for them, and that they will have a great year, both in terms of studies, but also other things. I am also happy that it will be these four students who are going. We want students who can represent the university college in a positive manner, says Melteig.

Wants to send more students abroad

The Faculty has exchange agreements with institutions in 10-15 countries, but Kaasin does not deny that TUC would like to have more students who wanted to go abroad.

– Yes, unfortunately, too few choose to do so, we would have liked to send more students abroad. We encourage all students to go abroad, and maybe these four students can open the door for more exchanges to China Three Gorges University, says Kaasin.

– The application deadline for Norwegian students to apply for Telemark University College is 15th of April, and for those that have not yet made up their mind, it could be a good idea to check what possibilities they have, says Kaasin.

More noodles

Yngve, Jarle, Rune og Jonas are ready to start an exciting year in China, but hope to get in contact with a company in Grenland before they leave.

– We are looking for a company that has a topic for our bachelor thesis, so if anyone finds this interesting, please do contact us, says Eide.

– What will be the best thing about going to China?

– The best thing will probably be that we do not have to cook as much as at home, since we can eat more in the school cafeterias, says Jarle Opheim.

– But as students, you should be used to noodles already?

– Yes, but China is the home of noodles. In China, I’m sure it tastes much better, says Rune Johansen.

Trainee in Water and Sewage Treatment

IMG 0008 Article originally appeared here: http://issuu.com/norsk_vann/docs/bulletin_2011_2

Bergen Municipality is one of several participants in the trainee programme “Trainee Vest”.

The programme is run by the Career Guidance Centre in Bergen. The project supervisor is Eivind Olsvik.

It is commonly known that it is difficult to recruit engineers with a background in water and sewage treatment. Bergen Water Company was asked whether they would be interested in recruiting engineers with an educational background in water and sewage treatment through Trainee Vest in early 2010.

After a thorough selection process Wei Li, was selected. He is 26 years old and has graduated with a master’s degree from Telemark University College. Wei Li has a bachelor’s degree in Chemistry and Biology from Hubei University and has taken a master’s degree in Energy and Environmental Technology. During his studies Wei Li has also had some work experience as a lab assistant in a sewage treatment project at Telemark University College.

Trainee Vest and Bergen Municipality have agreed to offer a 12-month trainee period to Wei Li. The goal of the trainee arrangement is to attract and retain highly qualified personnel in our field. The trainee will be given relevant tasks, get to know the organization and will sign a trainee contract. Trainee Vest offers a development programme where project manager Eivind Olsvik is the supervisor and project leader.

Wei Li speaks excellent English, but mastering the Norwegian language is an extra challenge for him. He is attending a Norwegian language course in his spare time.

Bergen Municipality is implementing a new plan for sewage treatment from 2010-2014 and that means that there are a lot of challenges to work with. So far Wei Li has worked with optimalising the use of chemicals at Knappen Wastewater Treatment Plant.

The goal is to optimalise such processes and functions to such a degree that the regulation demands for phosphorus removal are met. The goal is to reduce the use of chemicals by 6% every year. Several factors can influence the process, and it is important not to confuse these factors. If they are confused, the results caused by a specific action become very hard to interpret. We have therefore planned it so we can see the outcome of a single action in the bigger picture. Generally speaking the plan can be divided into the following parts: dosaging of chemicals, dosaging of polymers, sludge and wastewater treatment and equipment

A report on the optimalisation project now exists, describing the results, findings and new ideas. The results so far are promising, and Wei Li is working diligently on, along with Nils-Petter Johansen and Fereidun Akhoundsadeh finding mechanisms for dosaging that can reduce the use of chemicals at Knappen Wastewater Treatment Plant. This is an important task in itself and has a great transfer value to the new wastewater plants that will become operational in the period from 2011-2014.

Wei Li says he is enjoying his stay with us, he has challenging and exciting tasks and has started thinking about what will happen after the project at Knappen Wastewater Plant is finished. The expertise that Wei Li has accumulated through these months, will no doubt be important to Bergen Water Company in the years to come.

"Crash Cultural Weekend"-Gautefall-09th and 10th of September 2011

Every year Studylink has hosted a trip to the Norwegian mountains for new Chinese students, and this year was no exception. Students from Agder University, Gjovik University College and Telemark University College travelled to Gautefall in Telemark on Friday the 09th of September and returned to their respective campuses on Saturday the 10th of September. The trip is called “Crash Cultural Weekend”, because the students learn more about Norwegian culture and society, as well as practical information on what is expected of them as students in Norway. Students are also given advice about where to go shopping, what to buy, where to travel in Norway in their study breaks and more. It is also an opportunity to meet Chinese students from the other campuses in Norway.

After all the students from the different institutions had arrived, dinner was served. Authentic Chinese food was on the menu and everyone seemed to enjoy the food very much.

After the dinner it was time for the programme to start. Professor Hans Olav Grelland from University of Agder gave a lecture about Norwegian culture and what is expected of students in Norway. Professor Grelland is a professor in quantum physics and philosophy and has participated in the Crash Cultural Weekend on several occasions.

Former student Xi Zhimin gave a presentation about practical details, such as where to buy Chinese food products and which places in Norway to visit during the study breaks. He has lived in Norway for several years and had a lot of useful advice for the students.

The rest of the evening was spent learning how to make Norwegian cookies and waffles and socializing and getting to know each other.

On Saturday morning a Norwegian breakfast was served at 9 o’clock. Norwegian breakfast usually consists of slices of bread. On top of the bread slices Norwegians put slices of meat or cheese or different types of jam. For some students it was their first meeting with Norwegian breakfast.

After the breakfast it was time for a walking trip in the mountains. The students were also given a brief introduction to Norwegian history (held in Chinese). The Chinese students spent some time picking berries and exploring the outdoors.

Before departure students were given an introduction to Norwegian cleaning products and how to use them in their dormitories.

We were very lucky to have a family with us for the entire weekend who speak Chinese fluently. They also cooked for us and organised everything. So we would like to thank Inger and her family, for making this trip so successful. Everyone seemed to enjoy themselves very much.
