On November the 24th , "China meeting place, for higher Education and Research", was launched in Oslo by The Norwegian Association for Higher Education Institutions (UHR) with representatives from The Chinese Embassy, Norwegian Foreign affairs and ministry higher education and research:
The aim for establishing this meeting place is to coordinate and secure quality in international cooperation between Norway and China by sharing experience and information.
The Norwegian Foreign affairs by Political Adviser Tarjei Skirbekk underlined that “among the Norwegian institutions that are involved in cooperation with China, we also see increased recognition of the importance of having personnel with broad China competence …I can assure you that the Ministry of Foreign Affairs very much looks forward to cooperating with China Meeting Place in the future. I would like to congratulate the Norwegian Association of Higher Education Institutions on the initiative and to thank the Ministry of Education and Research for making this initiative possible. “
The Chinese Ambassador Tang, emphasized in his speech that he would like to propose the following for Norwegian consideration: In higher education cooperation We should seek for mutual recognition of academic degrees and credentials. I regard this as one of the top priorities. If we can accomplish this, the door will be opened wider for the future cooperation, especially for the programs of joint degrees or double degrees.
We should encourage Norwegian scholars and Chinese scholars to work together to cultivate Ph. D. students, mainly for the 985-Project universities.
-We should join efforts to establish English-taught programs in Chinese universities in certain fields Norwegian universities have their advantages and expertise, such as marine science, off-shore oil and gas technology, fishery, shipping, new energy, information technology, biological technology, and so on. In research cooperation We should make efforts to establish joint research centers in areas such as renewable energy, biomedicine, traditional medicine, environmental protection and polar research. Those centers should also serve to foster more enduring exchanges of ideas, experts and resources.
-We should encourage experts from both countries to participate in China’s national S&T programs, and Research Council of Norway’s large-scale programs such as climate change, new energy, and genomics.
-We should encourage the research institutions and industries of both countries to set up R&D centers in both countries, for producing mutually beneficial results for the advancement of the society. In conclusion, I want to express my appreciation to the Norwegian Association of Higher Education Institutions for its efforts to promote the China-Norway cooperation in Higher Education and research. The China Meeting Place serves as an excellent platform for exchanges of ideas and sharing of experience. I hope that this seminar could produce some fresh ideas for our future cooperation. I wish the seminar a great success
There were approx 150 Norwegian participants, the discussion with Key institutions, resulted in that this initiative was welcomed and one wished that in the future the meetings would be divided into different fields of cooperation.
We thank UHR, for the effort they put in to start up this initativ. We look forward to the next meetings.
