Brilliant experience to be an exchange student

exchange_student

International food festival

At the second weekend in school, our students come from China are so honored to participate into the annual International Food Festival with the leadership of Ms. Inger in the center of Telemark, Skien City.

For this event, we have worked continuously two days at Inger’s home and produced more than 1000 spring rolls by hand as the representative of Chinese traditional food. Besides the Chinese traditional food that we are familiar with, there was a kind of dessert with ice-cream, some sort of drink made by the students study in the International school.

Tourists both from home and abroad have attended the event. To satisfy the appetite and interest on the food with diversity tastes come from different country. People can enjoy the foods from Europe, Asia and other states, even you have never seen it before. Of course, the total is well known that Chinese cuisine has enjoyed premiere fame over the world. Our spring rolls all sold out, despite the bad weather has been raining. In addition to delicious and pretty food, the festival presented many programs combining the entertainment and sightseeing.

I am so honored as a volunteer whom can sell the traditional handmade food of our homeland in the international activities. And I also depth fell that this event is setting a grand stage to introduce and promote the world food culture and the taste of the food from home and abroad as well as a cultural exchange of east and west.

Crash Cultural Weekend

As the new students come from China in Telemark University College, we are so lucky to be invited to an activity named “Crash Cultural Weekend” at first week. This is not only the first time we leave our campus and have a short trip in Norway, but also an very important experience to feel the cultural differences between East and West, to learn how to take a better life in Norway.

Maybe most of the students are not stranger with the term cultural shock, or we can say crash culture. We have written more than one occasion when we were still in our home country. It express the lack of direction, the feeling of not knowing what to do or how to do things in a new environment, and not knowing what is appropriate or inappropriate. The definition becomes a reality after we leaved China to a new country—Norway. This feeling becomes very strong in the first few days, the way that we lived before is not accepted as or considered as normal in the new place. Everything is different, for example, not speaking the language, not knowing how to use banking machines, not knowing how to use the telephone and so forth. Coming weekend of the crash cultural is very timely.

This is a special weekend to prepare for the Chinese students by the Inger who is responsible for the studylink. Because the story of Inger’s family and China, we are so lucky to have the chance came to the beautiful mountain and live a wonderful night in the wooded house with green grass. Everyone was shocked when they expressed the warmly welcome in Chinese smoothly. Then the feeling of shocking changed to admiration, cultural conflict and integration is perfect reflected in them. And now us, the new student came from East and studying in the West, are experiencing the culture of conflict and learn how to melting it.

With the meticulous arrangement, we walked into the famous Norwegian woods to break fresh air and to enjoy get blueberry, we also have a wonderful lunch of Chinese tasted. But more significant, we learned a lot the way of the Norwegian life. For example, enjoyed a variety of Norway food to get used to the Western diet; learned how to identify and use a variety of cleaning tools; know more about the living habits of Norwegian and so on.

Two days are very short, but each of us got from it further longer than the time. We understand the essence of the “Crash Cultural Weekend” is that:'one can experience real pain from culture shock; it is also an opportunity for redefining one's life objectives. It is a great opportunity for leaning and acquiring new perspectives. Culture shock can make one develop a better understanding of oneself and stimulate personal creativity.'

Written on the first anniversary of the 5.12 earthquake

Obtained achievements in Gjovik University College

bian_yang

I am now working as a post-doc researcher in NISlab (Norwegian Information
Security Laboratory) at GUC(Gjovik University College). I joined the
research group led by Prof.Christoph Busch in NISlab from January 2008
doing research work for the European 7th Framework Project TURBINE(TrUsted
Revocable Biometric IdeNtitiEs) (integrated project) undertaken by GUC.
TURBINE is a 3-year project with a 6.3 M€ funding from the European
Commission, aiming at security and privacy enhancement of current
fingerprint based biometric systems which are increasingly imposed to
potential security concerns on fingerprint template's storage and abusing.
My research work for TURBINE is mainly focusing on algorthm design and
evaluation for fingerprint template protection and interoperability
testing.

Besides, I am now a Norway national body representative to the
international standard organization ISO/IEC JTC1/SC 27, engaged in pushing
ISO standardization on biometric template protection and output TURBINE's
results to the future ISO standards. I proposed Norway's official comments
(generated from TURBINE's new template protection strategies) on the last
working document (3rdWD) at the ISO SC27 meeting in Cyprus, 2008, and the
4th working document accepted our proposal as the largest major progress
to the original document.

I am now also having close cooperation with GUC's media technology
department engaging in preparation of media security course. My research
interests in the media security field include percpetual image/video
encryption, media data authentication and wateramrking, ..., etc.

During my over one year stay in GUC, I am very satisfied with GUC's
working environment and research atmosphere in technology innovation and
cooperation. Besides, I enjoy the natural environment here in Gjovik as
well. Living in Gjovik is peaceful, relaxed and comfortable, which makes
me able to concentrate on my research interests and refresh myselve every
time I am facing hard problem in researches.

Studying in Norway is a wise choice

song_xiaojie

Kongsberg Maritime

Everyone gets a job

wangningMy name is Wang Ning. I was graduated from Telemark University College in Norway, and received Master Degree of Science in Energy and Environment Technology in 2008.

Now I am working in DNV, Climate Change Service Department, Beijing Office as an auditor. DNV is an independent foundation with the objective of safeguarding life, property, and the environment, and it’s a leading international service provider of managing risk. DNV is a knowledge-based organization with about 300 offices in 100 different countries. Headquartered in Norway, Oslo, most of 8 000 employees are highly qualified engineers and technical personal. My job is to validate and verify CDM projects according to the modalities and procedures. CDM (Clean Development Mechanism) projects will assist countries in achieving sustainable development and emission reductions. I’m much honored to be a member of DNV.

Chinese New Year Celebration in Telemark

My name is Xiaowen Guo. I graduated from Beijing University of Posts and Telecommunications last summer. Now I am studying ICT (Information Communication and Technology) in University of Agder.

 Chinese_new_year_party

Today is the eve of Spring Festival. We get together in University of Telemark. It is snowing heavily all the way, but it never stops us to come and we have received a warm-hearted reception. The students in Telemark have arranged the accommodation for us and taken everything into consideration. I feel like being with families though this is my first time to spend spring festival in Norway. We invited our kind teachers and our good Norwegian friends to share this memorable experience. On the party, we showed our traditional food, dumplings and also Chinese dishes to everyone, and we enjoyed ourselves that night. At last, I have to say goodbye to our lovely friends. I will cherish this sweet experience forever.

Time flies! It is around half a year since I came to Grimstad, a small seaside town in the southmost of Norway. I have a lot to say to my family, my friends and the new coming students.

To study in Norway, I think I have made the right choice. Though we are not on the main campus in Kristiansand, the school has created a nice environment for us to study. The wireless network covers everywhere, by which we can freely access to the Internet and learn about everything going on the world. Compared with studying in China, I feel the biggest difference between two is that the professors are easily to approach whenever you are in need. There is no gap between us. Actually, I love this way of studying.

To live in Norway, it is very comfortable though I feel the price is very high when I came here first. I live in the students’ house with my lovely single room. Here is accommodated with hot water at any time and heating all over the year. So even if in winter, you can never feel cold, compared to living in the south of China. And in summer, the scenery is amazing. You can have a lot of outdoors activities, such as hiking, fishing, and swimming, etc. Our town is famous for visiting, so a lot of people will come here to spend their holidays by renting a summer house at seaside. Besides, if you have more spare time and a loose financial plan, you can order a very cheap flight to go outside Norway to experience different cultures without a visa, which I think is another advantage to study here.

The people in Norway are very nice to everyone. They can speak English fluently, so you will have no trouble talking to them. But I have to say that it is a little difficult to be one with them. I think this can be one of my drives to start to learn Norwegian.

Everything has two sides. All in all, I like Norway. It’s a smart choice to study and live here. I am looking forward to experience more wonderfully in the new year.

Casa Batll?, Barcelona

Lucky Day!

A Trip To Telemark
